The Lord Is My Shepherd

The River Nith in Scotland. Calm flowing blue water with lush green grassy banks. Daffodils in the foreground on the right. Open sky at the top meeting green rolling fields in the background. A natural line of tall green Scottish trees runs along the entire left side of the image from top to bottom. Beautiful warm golden sunlight filters through the tree branches on the left side, casting dappled rays of light across the water and the grassy banks. The sunlight creates a warm, ethereal, heavenly glow with visible light beams streaming through the leaves. Peaceful and serene.

Before David became a King, he was a Shepherd. Sometimes it feels like getting answers is hard. No matter what we do to change a situation it feels like swimming upstream. A Shepherd guides his sheep to safety and his sheep know this. God is always caring for us and taking care of every single need that we have. Where do we go when we don’t have a friend to turn to? Who do we go to when all of our sources seem to have dried up? We go to our Shepherd.

When we sit and observe nature, or sit in front of a river, we feel a deep sense of peace and with that the realization that everything in nature everything is always in perfect order. Praying this Psalm brings peace because God is our Shepherd, and as long as we listen to our Shepherd then surely goodness and mercy will follow us all the days of our lives.

Psalm 23

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.”

Psalm 23:1

He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters.

He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.

About River Nith

How a quiet river became a metaphor for learning to rest in God’s steady presence.

A Journey into Trusting God

River Nith flows out of years of prayer and trusting God with every desire and experiencing His love and healing in every area of my life. I write as a fellow pilgrim.

A single, smooth river stone resting at the very edge of a calm river, its surface darkened by a recent touch of water, with tiny droplets still clinging to its textured face. Around it, fine sand and smaller pebbles create subtle patterns, while the water nearby forms delicate ripples. Soft golden-hour sunlight brushes across the scene from the side, casting a gentle, elongated shadow of the stone and creating warm highlights on the wet surfaces. Shot at a low, close-up angle with a shallow depth of field, the background riverbank fades into a soft blur, evoking stillness, reflection, and the quiet strength found in trusting something greater than oneself.
